A bicyclist was injured after he was hit by a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck while crossing El Camino Real in Palo Alto College Terrace neighborhood Monday afternoon.
The cyclist was riding in the crosswalk at El Camino Real and College Avenue when he was struck shortly before 1 p.m., said Razik Khan, a bystander who witnessed the accident.
Khan said the truck was heading southbound in the center lane. The driver of another car, which was in the left lane, hit the brakes and barely avoided hitting the bicyclist, who Khan said appeared to be in his early 20s.
The bicyclist was thrown off the bike, spun in the air and landed feet-first across the street from JJ&F Food Store, Khan said.
Police, firefighters and medical responders arrived, interviewed the driver and cleared the scene within 10 minutes of the accident. Khan said the victim was conscious and alert but appeared to have suffered injuries and had to be transported into the ambulance by a stretcher.
Police Sgt. Dan Ryan said the victim suffered some scrapes and bruises and may have injured his knee. The victim was taken to an emergency room for treatment Monday afternoon but was expected to be released later in the day.
