Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Lonny Haschel told the media that one semi truck traveling east was crossing U.S. 287 when it was struck by a second semi traveling south. reports:

The driver of the southbound truck was ejected from the vehicle, Haschel said. The truck continued traveling south without a driver, crossed the median into northbound lanes and ended in a ditch, where a ruptured fuel tank caused it to catch fire.

A pickup truck also traveling southbound hit the ejected driver, causing the pickup to lose control and cross over the median. Haschel said the truck rolled over and came to a rest about 30 feet from the flaming semi truck.

An ambulance took the driver of the pickup to Wise County Regional Hospital. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening. The semi driver who was ejected was declared dead at the scene while the driver of the eastbound semi was not injured, Haschel said.

The trucker who was killed has not yet been identified.

The incident remains under investigation at this time.
