St. Ignace is located in Mackinac County, Michigan in the northern part of the state about 250 miles northeast of Muskegon, 183 miles northwest of Midland and about 197 miles northwest of Saginaw.<\/p>\n
The fatal 18-wheeler accident occurred just before 2:00 p.m. on Friday about half-way across the 5 mile span of the Mackinack Bridge that runs between St. Ignace and Mackinaw City.<\/p>\n

The trucker was identified as Randolph Smith, 64 years old from West Branch, MI. Smith was working for Griffin Beverage Company, located in West Branch, MI. He was returning to West Branch after making a delivery in St. Ignace.<\/p>\n
The tractor-trailer was traveling southbound onthe Mackinack Bridge when Smith suffered a mediacal emergency. His big rig crossed the center divider and struck one of the bridge rails. The semi truck managed to avoid one vehicle but struck another car coming from the opposite direction.<\/p>\n
The UpperMichiganSource.com<\/a> reports:<\/p>\n He missed one car but hit another going in the opposite direction. Two people in the car were taken to a local hospital, but Sweeney says their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n It appears that the semi truck travelled for about a quarter mile after crossing the divider before striking the vehicle.<\/p>\n The bridge was closed temporarily while the Michigan State Police (MSP) worked at the scene of the accident.<\/p>\n During the bridge closure, traffic was backed up about a quarter mile of the bridge in both directions – on the St. Ignace sie and the Mackinaw City side also.
