LAPLACE, La. – A fatal accident that occurred on Friday, Feb. 10, involving an 18 wheeler and multi vehicles has claimed the lives of 5 people in a four-car pileup on the I-10 near LaPlace, Louisiana. LaPlace is located in St. John the Baptist Parish, in the southeastern part of the state about 112 miles southeast of Lafayette, 60 miles southeast of Baton Rouge and 25 miles northwest of New Orleans.<\/p>\n

The crash occurred around 3 a.m. west of LaPlace, about 25 miles west of New Orleans.

According to Fox8Live<\/a>, State troopers received calls after 3:00 a.m. about a driver going eastbound in the westbound lanes on the elevated portion of the interstate.<\/p>\n

As police were in pursuit, the driver crashed head-on into a car carrying four people. The driver’s car burst into flames, then an 18-wheeler sideswiped both vehicles. Soon after, two other vehicles slammed into the crash scene.<\/p>\n

It is unclear why the driver was in the wrong lane. Troopers say the driver of the car going the wrong way died on the scene. His identification is withheld, pending notification of his next of kin.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Police told the media that passengers of the other vehicles were taken to a hospital in “very critical” condition where they later died from their injuries.<\/p>\n

The victims were identified as 30-year-old driver Lawayne Rice from Zachary, La., 27-year-old Terrell Sims from Slaughter, La., 19-year-old Louis Brown Jr. and 20-year-old Dondray London, both from Baton Rouge.<\/p>\n

The incident remains under investigation at this time.<\/p>\n
