CHARLOTTE, NC — An elderly woman was tragically killed by a tractor trailer after wandering into oncoming traffic along Interstate 85 late Tuesday night, Sept. 18.<\/p>\n

A missing woman in the early stages of dementia was killed by semi trucks while walking into oncoming traffic on I-85 in Charlotte, NC on September 18, 2012.<\/p><\/div>\n

Charlotte police were investigating a missing persons case when the news of the woman came in. Officers said that 76-year-old Shirley Pharr, who was in the early stages of dementia, was struck and killed just before midnight along I-85 southbound near Freedom Drive.<\/p>\n

The State Highway Patrol said Pharr was hit by two semi trucks traveling southbound. The semi truck drivers told officials Pharr appeared out of nowhere.<\/p>\n

WBTV.com reports:<\/p>\n

Pharr was last seen leaving her home on Dawnshire Avenue at around 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, after telling neighbors she was going to get her nails done.<\/p>\n

Her sons, Michael and Darryl, said her health had been going downhill quickly. The family took shifts looking out for her but couldn’t be there every minute.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

“We thought we had it covered, but it was just that one split second,” said Michael Pharr.<\/p>\n

The brothers said she had just had an appointment with a neurologist Tuesday at the hospital.<\/p>\n

“All of this came on all of a sudden,” said Darryl Pharr.<\/p>\n

Both brothers said she loved her grandchildren very much.<\/p>\n

“And she will be missed. Mom, we love you,” said Darryl.<\/p>\n
