A Lawrenceville man died Sunday afternoon while doing mechanical work on a truck that rolled and crushed him, authorities said.
The accident happened about 3:45 p.m. in the 600 block of Chandler Drive in Lawrenceville, near Five Forks Trickum Road. The victim, Vincent Williams, 43, died at the scene, authorities said.
Officials believe the silver pickup's drive shaft may have disengaged, causing it to roll down a driveway on top of Williams. A passerby who witnessed the truck rolling ran to help, and was able to stomp his foot on the brake until authorities arrived.
Emergency responders found Williams pinned under the vehicle, unconscious and unresponsive. A special unit deployed air-bags to lift the vehicle, but Williams had already died, said Fire Department spokesman Capt. Thomas Rutledge.
"This is a tragic accident," he said. "Our thoughts and prayers are now with the family."
Williams died of chest injuries and from being dragged by the vehicle, according to a Gwinnett police report.
Williams' wife told police he was working to remove something that had become lodged under the vehicle, the report said.
