MADISONVILLE, Texas — Twelve students traveling to Odessa on an Ector County Independent School District bus were injured when a single fire engine crashed into them after police directed the bus to change lanes due to a large grass fire in the area.

Madisonville is about 485 miles west of Odessa and about 97 miles northwest of Houston.

The accident occurred on Sunday morning, May 6, around 9 a.m. near the city of Madisonville where 33 students members of the ECISD’s Horticulture club and their nine sponsors attending the trip in Huntsville were returning from their annual spring trip.

Trooper Jimmy Morgan with DPS in Bryan, TX told NewsWest 9 that a Leona Volunteer Fire Department truck was responding to a fire that two other fire trucks were already at. The driver of the third truck tried to make a U-turn on the highway to join the other two trucks, but the driver didn’t notice the ECISD school bus coming up alongside it. The truck was struck by the school bus, causing this morning’s accident.

ECISD Greenhouse Instructor Nathan Pettigrew said the injured students were transported to hospitals in Centerville, Crockett, and Palestine because the hospital in Madisonville was not big enough for all them. The media reported that injuries sustained were not life threatening. Those not transported by EMS were taken to Centerville High School.

After the group was reunited at the school, a Centerville Independent School District bus was scheduled to take the group to a midway point where a bus from ECISD would bring the group back to Odessa, ECISD Communications Director Mike Adkins said.

FORT WORTH, TX – Louis Nieves was sentenced by a Fort Worth jury of intoxication manslaughter in the death of a semi truck driver who was killed on March 2011 when his tanker truck exploded in a fatal wreck east of downtown Fort Worth.

Nieves, who was DWI at the time, admitted to television station WFAA that he got behind the wheel of his pickup after drinking 10 beers and was responsible for “a real bad accident”, crashing head-on into the gasoline tanker truck as he drove the wrong way on Interstate 30 near Beach Street.

Nieves will receive a maximum term of 20 years in prison for the deadly DUI accident that killed Alejandro Raya, 45, the driver of the tanker truck. Raya was married and a father of three.

A video of his TV interview was played for jurors at his trial.

Fort Worth truck Accident Lawyer, Gordon, Elias & Seely, L.L.P. , state that when a truck driver impaired by drugs or alcohol makes the decision to get behind the wheel of their semi tractor-trailer, any driver traveling near them is at risk for injury or death. The power and sheer force of a speeding, 18-wheel truck is a dangerous weapon that could forever change one’s life.

The multi vehicle collision occurred on Friday, April 27, around 6:30 a.m. on State Highway 123 South of Seguin near Fox Trotter Road about 35 miles northeast of San Antonio, TX.

The driver of the 18-wheeler involved in the accident was taken to University Hospital in San Antonio in critical condition. The rest of the accident victims were taken to Guadalupe Regional Medical Center for observation.

Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Jason Reyes said, “It appears that we had an 18-wheeler that was southbound on 123 and the PT Cruiser that was in front of it had pulled over on the shoulder to allow the 18-wheeler to pass. It appears that the 18-wheeler had clipped the PT Cruiser, causing it to spin directly in front of the bus, striking the bus. A Ford Focus that was directly behind the bus became involved in the crash.”

Shortly after the crash, a fire erupted destroying all four vehicles, Reyes said.

“We are not certain what started the fire at this moment but once we had the impact between the 18-wheeler and the PT Cruiser it started and spread,” he said.

According to a school official none of the students sustained life threatening injuries.

The accident remains under investigation at this time.

FMCSA changed its mind and said it was withdrawing the proposed regulatory guidance for obstructive sleep apnea and request for comment that it announced on Friday, April 20.

In an announcement made on Friday, The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) said that they were proposing tougher standards for sleep apnea evaluation by adopting the recommendations of two advisory panels, one from the medical community and one representing industry, enforcement, labor and safety advocacy interests, for how medical examiners should evaluate the condition.

The panels said the agency should tell medical examiners that drivers with a body mass index of 35 or more must be evaluated for sleep apnea. In a Federal Register notice posted Friday, the agency asked for comments on this and a number of additional recommendations concerning apnea screening, evaluation and treatment.

However, the FMCSA later withdrew the proposal stating:

“The agency is still in the process of carefully reviewing the recommendations submitted by the Motor Carrier Safety Advisory Committee and Medical Review Board. The initial publication was a clerical error. We anticipate requesting public comment on the recommendations later this year.”

The accident occurred about 3 a.m. early Friday morning, April 13, when the flatbed heavy duty truck crashed into a stopped 18-wheeler truck, which was then pushed into another 18-wheeler truck that was also stopped on the North Sam Houston Parkway West near the State Highway 249 exit.

Map showing location of a rescue of a heavy duty flatbed truck driver after crashing into a stopped semi truck on State Highway 249 in northwest Houston, TX on April 13, 2012.

The reason that the 18-wheeler trucks were stopped was because a utility company was pulling electrical lines across the tollway and had closed all the lanes during the process.

The driver of the heavy duty truck did not notice the stopped traffic until it was too late and was unable to stop in time which caused the multi-vehicle accident.

The incident remains under investigation at this time.
