NEWINGTON, VA – Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid’s wife and daughter were involved in a semi-truck accident in Fairfax County Virginia on northbound Interstate 95 near Exit 166 on Thursday, March 11, about 1:10 p.m. about 14 miles south of Washington D.C. The two were injured when their 2005 Honda Odyssey van was struck in the rear in stop-and-go traffic by a tractor-trailer hauling a load of plastic rolls. The van they were driving struck a third car and the van was crushed on both ends as a result of the impact.

Virginia State Police say that Landra G. Reid, 69, and Lana Reid-Barringer, 48, Sen. Reid’s wife and daughter were seriously injured in the big rig accident.

A spokesman for Sen. Reid, Jon Summers, said in a statement late Thursday afternoon that Mrs. Reid sustained a broken nose, broken back and broken neck and that his daughter Lana received a neck injury and facial lacerations.

In the statement, Summers said that both Mrs. Reid and Lana were conscious and were able to feel their extremities. According to doctors their injuries are non-life threatening.

Both were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident. They were subsequently transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, VA.

Police said that Alan W. Snader, 59, of Ohio was the driver of the 18 wheeler.  Snader, who was not injured in the accident, was charged with reckless driving.
