ATLANTA, GA – A young child died Tuesday, June 1, 2010, when the parked car he was in was hit by an out of control semi trailer truck in Fulton County, Georgia. The fatal truck accident occurred in an Auto Zone store’s parking lot in Atlanta, GA, just off the Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway. The area is in the north central section of the state, about 147 miles east of Birmingham, Alabama and about 119 miles south of Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Crews were brought in to remove the wreckage of the damaged cars and semi truck. A Haz-Mat team was also at the site to clean up fuel that spilled from the 18 wheeler after the truck accident.

The events leading to the truck accident began around noon on Tuesday on the Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway in northwest Atlanta. A semi trailer truck was driving on the parkway when a white car going in the opposite direction reportedly lost control and crossed over into the 18 wheeler’s path and hit it nearly head-on. The driver of the car has been identified as 18 year old Kelly Canty.

According to the unidentified truck driver, after colliding with Ms. Canty’s car he attempted to maneuver his rig so he would not hit any more cars on the busy road, but he lost control of the 18 wheeler. The semi trailer left the parkway and jumped the curb, and went into the parking lot of the Auto Zone automobile parts store. Auto Zone is based in Memphis, TN.

The out of control semi trailer truck slammed into three parked cars in the store’s lot. One of the cars held 2 year old Zion Curney and his unidentified 14 year old cousin. The two children were waiting for one of their parents shopping in the Auto Zone store.

Atlanta emergency personnel rushed to the scene and extricated the two children from their car. Once free they were transported to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta in Eggleston.

After an initial investigation of the deadly truck accident, Atlanta police arrested Kelly Canty, the driver of the white car. She has been charged with First Degree Vehicular Homicide after the toddler died Tuesday night. Ms. Canty was also cited for failure to maintain her lane, reckless driving, and driving without a license, insurance, or tag. Police took Ms. Canty into custody and she was incarcerated at the Fulton County Jail.

Investigators have not determined the reason that Ms. Canty crossed the dividing center line of the Hollowell Parkway and set off the deadly chain reaction collision. The truck accident remains under investigation.
