Fatal Dump Truck Crash on Texas Highway 46 in Bulverde, Texas

BULVERDE, TX – On Friday, April 2, 2010 just after 3:00 p.m. a dump truck rear-ended a black 1997 Chevy 1500 pickup truck with two occupants, sending it into the path of oncoming traffic on Highway 46 where it collided with two more pickup trucks.

Three pickup trucks lie entangled in a twisted pile of wreckage following the horrific truck accident in Bulverde, Texas on Highway 46 just west of U.S. 281.

In the crash, the two occupants of the Chevy pickup were ejected from their vehicle. One of the occupants, 45-year old Rona Fields, died at the scene of the accident. She was a mother of four. The driver, 61-year old Edgar Boeck, survived the crash, but with serious injuries.

The horrific crash occurred when Boeck, waiting to make a left turn into his driveway in the 21900 block of Texas Highway 46, was struck from behind by a westbound dump truck owned by Stone & Soil Depot and Company out of Boerne, TX. The dump truck was being driven by Brian Robinson, 43 years old, from New Braunfels, TX. The company has a retail yard on southbound US 281, just north of the intersection at Highway 46.

The force of the collision sent Boeck’s pickup truck into eastbound traffic and resulted in multiple collisions. The horrendous impacts left the Chevy pickup in a twisted pile of metal and glass that was almost unrecognizable.

Bulverde is located between Austin and San Antonio in central Texas. It is about 84 miles southwest of Austin, 26 miles north of San Antonio, 218 miles west of Houston, 281 miles southwest of Dallas, 540 miles southeast of El Paso, 302 miles north of Brownsville and about 500 miles southeast of Amarillo.

In the truck accident, the black Chevy pickup was hit head-on by a gold Ford F-350 pickup traveling eastbound on Texas 46. The driver of the Ford F-350 was Brandon Caseres 19, years old, from Spring Branch, TX. Following the Ford F-350 pickup and also traveling eastbound behind the Ford, was a fourth vehicle, a white Nissan pickup. It was being driven by Corey Stevens of New Braunfels, TX, who then collided with both the Ford and the Chevy pickup trucks.

According to law enforcement, no injuries were reported to occupants of the Nissan. A 4-year old passenger, secured by a carseat at the time, was also traveling in the Nissan.

Reports indicate that Robinson, the driver of the dump truck, failed to see Boeck’s stopped pickup truck before slamming into it.

Multiple agencies responded to the accident. EMS from Bulverde/Spring Branch responded to the scene within minutes. Also responding were Bulverde Police, Comal County Sheriff’s Office and Bulverde Area Volunteer Fire Department.

Boeck was airlifted to University Hospital in San Antonio where he was listed in critical condition. Initially, he was not expected to survive, but his condition had been upgraded to serious, but stable, as of April 5. He sustained head trauma, two broken legs and other injuries for which has undergone numerous surgeries. He is scheduled to undergo another surgery this week on his legs.

Caseres, the driver of the Ford F-350 pickup, was also airlifted to University Hospital with a knee injury. He was released on April 3.

Bulverde Police Chief, Joe Hamilton, commented on the horrific accident. “This one ranks up there with some of the worst accidents seen,” “This was a bad wreck,” he said. Hamilton said that no charges had been filed as of April 5 but that the accident remains under investigation.

The section of Texas Highway 46 where the accident occurred is a straight-a-way with a long incline to the west and a curve to the north at the east end. It has a posted speed limit of 55 mph. The stretch of highway remained closed for about 3 hours after the accident.
