LAFAYETTE, CO – A semi trailer truck crashed head-on with a Toyota pick-up truck Friday afternoon, September 10, on a highway in Boulder County, Colorado. The driver of the pick-up truck suffered serious injuries in the truck accident which occurred on U.S. Highway 287 near South Boulder Road in the city of Lafayette, CO. The accident area is in the north part of the Denver metro region in the north central section of the state, about 135 miles north of Pueblo, CO and about 88 miles south of Cheyenne, Wyoming.

On Friday afternoon a female truck driver and her husband were in a semi trailer truck traveling through Boulder County on U.S. Highway 287. The husband, who was a passenger in the trailer truck, did not want to disclose his name or his wife’s to the public. The semi was carrying a load of broken concrete in the trailer section of the 18 wheeler truck. At this time it is not known who owns the tractor trailer or where the load of concrete was being delivered.

The truck accident occurred at about 2:39 p.m. when a black Toyota pickup truck, which was traveling in the opposite direction on the highway, began to move erratically. According to the male passenger he and his wife observed the Toyota pick-up weaving back and forth in the lanes on the highway just before the collision occurred.

The pick-up was in the area on U.S. Highway 287 just north of South Boulder Road when it suddenly crossed into the grassy median of the highway and drove directly into the path of the oncoming semi trailer truck carrying the load of concrete. The female truck driver attempted to maneuver out of the way but was unable to avoid colliding with the smaller truck. The 18 wheeler left a trail of skid marks at the truck accident scene where the driver tried to swerve out of the way of the oncoming Toyota.

Lafayette police officers and local emergency technicians rushed to the site of the head-on truck accident. The unidentified driver of the Toyota was apparently trapped in his vehicle for a time after the crash. A rescue team worked to extricate him from cab section of the pick-up. Once freed the EMTs would treat him for almost an hour before he was stabilized enough for a medical helicopter to transport him to a nearby hospital. His current condition has not been released but it is believed he suffered serious injuries.

The female driver of the semi trailer was also injured in the truck accident. She was stabilized at the scene before being taken to Exempla Good Samaritan Medical Center. Her condition was not released to the public. According to the male passenger, who was not injured, he believes his wife may have broken an arm in the head-on collision.

Police shut down a section of the highway surrounding the truck accident for several hours while highway crews cleared the disabled pick-up truck from the traffic lanes and investigators reconstructed the crash. Officials have not determined why the driver of the Toyota was driving erratically and the reason he crossed over the median into oncoming traffic. Authorities have not said if they suspect drugs or alcohol as factors in the head-on collision.

No charges have been made at this time and the truck accident remains under investigation.
