PHOENIX, Ariz. — A semi truck traveling westbound on I-10 near Tonopah, AZ  on Sunday, July 29, crossed a 100-foot median and traveled 300 feet before smashing head-on into an eastbound van that was carrying 7 people.

The accident occurred near mile marker 87.1 just west of Tonopah and about 58 miles west of Phoenix. Both vehicles burst into flames and then plunged into a culvert from the force of impact.

Carrick Cook, a spokesman for the Arizona Department of Public Safety, says the victims were all inside the van when the crash happened. The bodies were all burned beyond recognition. Officials say it may take weeks to identify the remains.

The semi truck driver and his wife sustained serious injuries and were airlifted to a local hospital, but are expected to recover.

The incident remains under investigation at this time.
