MUNCIE, IN – The front section of a semi truck is dangling off a highway bridge in Muncie, Indiana after colliding with a passenger car. The accident happened Wednesday afternoon at State Highway Indiana 67 Bypass and Frontage Road (State Road 3) north of the city. The area is in the east-central section of the state, 63 miles northeast of Indianapolis and 230 miles southeast of Chicago, Illinois.

The cab of the truck and part of the trailer dangled over the edge, directly above Broadway Ave.

On Wednesday afternoon a truck driver for Provision Farms of Ossian, IN was driving south on the Indiana 67 Bypass, hauling a load of soybeans. As he reached the intersection of Frontage Road (State Road 3), a passenger car attempted to merge onto the bypass directly in front of the Provision Farms trailer truck. The car had been traveling north on Broadway Avenue.

There apparently was not enough distance for a safe merge, and the trailer truck hit the passenger car. After hitting the car the 18 wheeler crashed over the side of the highway bridge. The cab of the truck and part of the trailer dangled precariously over the edge, directly above Broadway Avenue.

The car driver was ejected from his vehicle during the collision with the truck. He suffered serious injuries in the truck accident and was treated at the scene and then airlifted by Lifeline helicopter to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. His car was demolished in the truck accident.

The truck driver was able to crawl out of his cab by himself after the truck crash. He was also transported to the hospital in a helicopter. There were no reports on his condition.

Police shut down the section of the highway around the truck accident scene as well as intersection of US 35 and Indiana 67 so work crews could secure and remove the truck. The Provision Farms trailer truck was still on the bridge, with the passenger side wheels apparently holding the 18 wheeler in place.

Workers were removing the load of soybeans first to lighten the truck before attempting to pull it back over the edge. The trailer truck was also leaking gas and other fluids after the accident and other workers were attempting to contain the spill.

As of 5:00 p.m. the truck was still over the edge of the bridge and the crews were still working.

The northbound lanes of the Indiana 67 Bypass had reopened, but the southbound lanes remained closed while the work continued. They are expected to remain closed until the truck can be removed and the truck accident scene is safe for travel. The road under the bridge, Broadway, also remains closed to traffic.

The Police are still investigating the truck accident. The preliminary analysis is that the car pulled into the path of the Provision truck with insufficient room to merge.

No charges or citations have been made at this time.
