Author: HENDERSONVILLE, TN – Two semi trucks were involved in a multi vehicle accident early Monday morning north of Nashville in Hendersonville, Tennessee, slowing the morning commute. The truck accident happened in Sumner County on Viet Nam Veterans Boulevard near the Center Point exit. The accident area is in the central section of the state, 150 miles northwest of Chattanooga, TN and 128 miles north of Huntsville, Alabama.
A Pepsi semi truck hauling a cargo of soda, driven by 57 year old Jimmy L. Hanserd, slammed into the disabled vehicles and the empty trash container and trailer. The Pepsi tractor trailer truck then drove into the retainer wall on the highway.
At around 5:20 a.m. Monday, 53 year old Darvin C. Mann of Charlotte was driving a BFI tractor trailer truck carrying trash containers west on Viet Nam Veterans Blvd. As he drove near mile marker 2 and the Center Point exit a trash container fell off the truck and the trailer on the truck became loose. The trailer truck is reportedly owned by Allied Waste.
A Honda Prelude, driven by 50 year old Freeda J. Simmons of Gallatin, crashed into the container. The impact caused the loose trailer to disengage from the main truck and it blocked the highway traffic lanes. A Mazda minivan, driven by 29 year old Jada Pratt of Goodlettsville, also smashed into the container and trailer from the BFI truck.

Local emergency personnel responded to the scene of the truck accident. Ms. Simmons, the driver of the Honda, was treated at the scene and then transported to Vanderbilt University Hospital with multiple injuries. Her injuries were severe and she died a short time later.
Officials later reported that Ms. Simmons was an emergency room nurse at Vanderbilt, and was driving home from her shift when the truck accident occurred.
The driver of the mini van was taken to Hendersonville Medical Center with minor injuries and was later released. The two truck drivers were not injured in the double truck accident.
Tennessee Highway Patrol responded to the scene of the truck accident and shut down the eastbound lanes in the vicinity of the multiple collisions. Crews were brought in to clear the wreckage of the trucks and vehicles and to remove the lost cargo out of the highway’s traffic lanes.

The work caused serious delays in the morning commute on both sides of the highway, as westbound travelers slowed to view the truck accident scene. The lanes were reopened shortly before 8:00 a.m.
The truck accident is being investigated by the THP and their Critical Emergency Response Team. They are performing post crash inspections on the BFI truck and trailer to determine if the trash container was properly secured on the trailer. They do not believe that drugs and alcohol were factors in the multi truck crash.
The driver of the BFI truck faces charges, which will be made once the investigation of the multi truck accident is complete.
