LOMBARD, IL – On Monday evening, April 21, 2010, a truck accident trapped two pedestrians under an SUV in Du Page County, Illinois. The semi trailer truck collided with the SUV at the juncture of Roosevelt Road and Main Street in the city of Lombard, about 20 miles west of Chicago. The accident area is in the northeast section of the state, 190 miles northeast of Springfield, IL and 90 miles south of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The driver of the SUV was trapped in his vehicle after the truck accident and local firefighters would work for more than 20 minutes to extricate him

Shortly after 8:00 p.m. Monday evening an unidentified truck driver was driving a semi tractor truck east on Roosevelt Road in Lombard, IL. The 18 wheeler truck belonged to Jewel Food Corporation based in Itasca, IL.

As the Jewel trailer truck entered the intersection of Roosevelt Rd. and Main St. it collided with a Hyundai Santa Fe SUV traveling north on Main St. The SUV was driven by an unidentified 18 year old.

The impact of the truck accident forced the Hyundai SUV off of its wheels and it rolled over on the sidewalk that runs along the south side of Roosevelt Rd. As the vehicle tipped over it fell on two pedestrians who happened to be walking by at the time of the truck accident.

After the truck accident several passersby rushed over to help the two people, a husband and wife, trapped under the Hyundai SUV. According to one person involved there were about seven people involved in the rescue. They rolled the SUV a few inches one way so the woman, 49 year old Pascuala Hernandez-Gutierrez of Lombard, could be freed and then rolled the vehicle the other way to free her husband Roman Gomez, Sr.

Lombard police and emergency personnel responded to the scene of the truck accident.

Ms. Hernandez-Gutierrez was stabilized and then transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, about five miles away. Unfortunately the woman had sustained fatal injuries in the accident and died Tuesday morning.

The driver of the SUV was trapped in his vehicle after the truck accident and local firefighters would work for more than 20 minutes to extricate him. Once free he was taken to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital with unknown conditions, but they are believed to be non life threatening.

The driver of the Jewel Food trailer truck was not injured in the collision.

Police shut down sections of the road around the truck accident scene, however there were no significant delays as the nighttime traffic was relatively light.

No charges or citations have been made at this time and the Lombard Police expect to spend several weeks investigating this truck accident.
